Objectives
In this work, the focus is on diagnosis and performance of the exhaust flow system of the diesel engine by means of turbocharger. Performance and diagnosis of the exhaust flow system components is of importance since faults in this system may cause increase emissions levels set by legislation and compromise engine efficiency.
Stricter vehicle emission standards and customer demands have forced the automotive industry to produce vehicles with lower emissions without compromising fuel consumption and engine power. Since the year 2000, all cars sold in the EU must be equipped with an on-board diagnostics (OBD) system. Engine performance monitoring can be applied by measuring and analyzing the mechanical characteristics associated with the engine components. New automobile diesel engines are usually equipped with variable geometry turbochargers (VGT) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
The VGT is a system that improves the efficiency and performance of the engine by changing the geometry of the turbine. EGR is an emission control system that reduces engine emissions (N0x) by recirculation of the exhaust gases back into the cylinders.
